is there a way to turn on a windows xp computer home edition without having it restart again. because this is what happens. i turn on the computer then before it gets me to the start menu. the title page shows up then all this image and it takes like 1 minute for all of it to be over. so what i want is to turn it on and i can start working already.
"Hibernate" puts all of the information in RAM onto the disk, then turns off the computer. The computer uses no power when hibernating, and you can unplug it. Try it if you don't understand exactly what it does.
When you wake a computer from hibernation, it will take around 30 seconds instead of 3 minutes to be ready and all of the programs that you had open will be as they were when you left it.
After following that guide, use Microsoft BootVis: [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
Go to file -> new trace -> boot and drivers -> ok -> reboot. Then do nothing until BootVis starts up again. Then go to tools -> optimize. Your boot times will now be up to 3x faster.
It is critically important that you don't use any sort of rescue CD or OS-on-a-disk while windows is hibernating. It will totally ruin everything. Also, BootVis won't and shouldn't run on anything other than XP; don't try to use it on Vista. [ theymos's advice column | Ask theymos A Question ]
