Scared about period...

Question Posted Thursday July 31 2008, 1:07 am

Umm... Hi. This is sort of an awkward and/or dumb question, but I'll just come out with it.

Well, I'm almost 14 and I still haven't gotten my period. But the thing is, I'm really scared to get it. I've heard SO MANY embarrassing stories about girls getting their periods at school and soaking through their pants, and I've also heard it doesn't feel like a thing, so you don't know if you pants are all bloody... I'm really nervous, and I have a feeling I'll get mine soon, but I need to know if there's some kind of warning or something that you get before you have your period... so, anyone?

First, your question isn't dumb at all! It's natural to be curious/worried about this, haha. And believe me, theres many more awkward things on this site. :P
You're at the age where you SHOULD be getting it soon, and there are a few warning signs to know once it'll be coming soon.

-One of the biggest ones would be excessive/brown discharge.
-Cramps in your stomach.
-Feeling very anxious or sick (pukey feeling).
-Headaches.
-Feeling oddly emotional.
-Very tired.
-Feeling bloated (either full, or actually feeling like you've gained weight or look bigger).

What's probably going to happen though is that you'll go to the bathroom and notice a little blood or something. Even if you get it during the day at school, it's really not so horrible. Usually, you'll be able to figure out. If you don't think you can be sure, make sure you ask to go to the bathroom as SOON as something feels weird. The only way it'd soak through your jeans would be that if it was REALLY HEAVY (which I doubt would happen on your first day), or if you just sat there and continued to let it soak through after a while. I'm pretty sure you'll be able to figure out after a little bit, and if you're not sure what's going on, it will still feel wet on your jeans. That's one of the worst things about periods--the self conciousness and feeling like you're wet a lot of the time.

Just make sure you take the precaution of keeping a pad or tampon (if you think you can use one..) with you most times, or if your discharge is really heavy one day, use one just in case.

It'll be alright, and don't be scared!

XOXO
KAT.

I got mine jusst before I turned fourteen. I just turned fifteen, though.
But yeahh, I had the discharge so I started wearing pantyliners because it was soo gross! But I was always TERRIFIED of getting mine because girls in the locker rooms would talk about the agonizing headaches, cramps, etc.
I was diagnosed with PMDD [premenstrual dysphoric disorder] but I take medication, of course.
But it still wasnt nearly as bad as I thought it was going to be!
You may notice a bit of dark brown/ black in your panties. That was my red flag! Hahaa but yeah.
Dont worry if you cant use a tampon right away, either. I STILL cant!
But pads are a bother but only because they make you feel rather unattractive. Or is that just me?
But I highly doubt anythings going to 'seep through'. Wearing denim pants is a good idea for that time of the month.
I refer to le red tide as TOM [time of month]. Soon enough, you will learn to tolerate Tom. You may even be friends :D
ew, just kidding

I havent started my period yet, and im a little scared, but i have and older sister and a booklet to help me with it,so anyways, you should probably start wearing pantiliners because this is the age wear you usually start your period. My friend said you can feel the blood come out , so if your in school, make sure you bring pads and pantiliners, and put them in your bookbag, so youll be prepared, you might get moody and you might get a crampy weekness on the lowest part of your stomach, which is what my mom said, some girls dont get that at all though,so you are probably just going to have to bring some pads and pantiliners with you, and if your going somewhere besides school, you can bring a purse along and put them in there.

I hope i could help!

Getting your period isn't as bad as people make it sound. Before getting your period, you should get discharge. Discharge is white/clear stuff that you'll see on your underwear. When you get that, you should be getting your period not too long after. Also, wear panty liners which will protect it from going on your underwear and it's not noticeable or uncomfortable. Make sure you carry either a pad or a tampon in your purse just in case you get it. Some girls also get cramps before their period or during their period so if you're stomach starts to hurt, it's probably because of that.

You should notice when you're menstruating. As soon as you think you are, because it'll be all wet and gross, go to the bathroom, bring two panty-liners (one tiny one, and one thick one), and put the thick one on the inside of your underwear and if it soaked really bad, put the small one on the outside. That way it won't soak onto your jeans. There isn't really a warning, but the first time, it's not that bad. It should be pretty light.
