It all depends on how you learn, but I'd definitely recommend Rosetta stone for learning the actual reading part of Japanese! I'm pretty sure how the program works is that they show a picture or symbol, and then show how to say the word for it. This way, you'll instantly notice it, like seeing a dog and knowing the word 'dog' goes with it.
Also, I've got a few friends who take Japanese, and they don't seem to have too many problems with it, plus it's so common now a days with anime and everything, it'll really come in handy!

Have fun! :D
Saiyonara (Some japanese to start you off :P)

Japanese consists of learning the language in two different forms: the actual spoken language and the symbols of the language, if that makes sense.

I've had a lot of people tell me it's easy and a lot of people tell me it's hard. It really depends on how you look at it and how much you're willing to put into learning it. If you put a lot into learning, it might be easier. If you just are whatever about it, it might be harder. Dedication is key with learning a new language.

I know nothing about Rosetta Stone, but it seems like it could work, based on online reviews.
