It's not stupid at all. it's not like we're all born with the innate knowledge of how to give a handjob.
Explore his body with your hands. Yes, his whole body. Just to map out his body in your mind. And when you get to your goal, let your fingers do the walking. take your time and explore and caress everything. While you're doing this, you should listen and watch his reactions to gauge what you should explore further and what you should back off on. Every guy is different, so I can't tell you specifics.
