When you go in, they clean your face then put the wax on, then they take it back off. This process is done many times to remove hair from the top & bottom of both eyebrows and the middle where some people have a "unibrow". Then they will pluck the hairs that the wax did not take off & use scissors to shorten your eyebrows if they're too long. Then they apply lotion on them & tada you're done!
Yes it does hurt the first time since there is alot more hair than if you have gone regularly. And no there is not a way to really make it less painful, its not that bad, it just hurts for a little while.
Remember that some people "break out" rite after getting your eyebrows done so be careful what you have planned after it the first time (just to see how you react). And the area will be red for a few minutes after getting them done.
