Okay well... I'm making this costume for the first time for an upcoming anime convention. I'm now working on the shirt. My mum has tried to explained to me what interfacing is... but I still cannot get it.
Can anyone simply explain it to me?
Example. "Interfacing: Cut 1 on fold." Is what it says on the pattern.
Thank you!

It isn't very expensive. You basically use it to make that certain peice of material stronger, more sturdy, or to just hold its shape better so it does not move or stretch. Say your peice you need to put interfacing on is a square, then you cut the interfacing a little bit bigger than the size of the square. You do this so you are sure to cover the whole peice in case it may shrink a little when you iron it on, or in case your fabric accidently moves out of place when ironing. Put the bumpy side down on the back of your fabric, then iron it on like you would anything else. Once it is stuck onto your fabric cut the interfacing to the size of your fabric square, then use the peice normally as your pattern says to. If you dont want to go out and buy interfacing you could always cut another peice of material exactly the same and when you sew your costume have the "cloned" peice right behind and sew with both peices in on top of eachother. That is a more difficult way, but if you think you can do it, give it a shot.
Oh, and the whole cut on fold thing, what you do is fold your fabric and place your pattern peice with the arrow and edge that says "place on fold" on the fold of your fabric, trace and cut while having material folded (Therfore cutting through two layers and ending up with one peice double the size of your pattern peice). Cut interfacing the exact same way and then apply interfacing to fabric the way i explained above.
Hope I helped :) and If you have any other questions about pattern making or sewing, feel free to ask me ;) [ gr8fruit's advice column | Ask gr8fruit A Question ]

So basically, it's like adding more fabric to the area, so it's thicker.
