Blisters

Question Posted Saturday July 19 2008, 4:21 pm

Is it better to pop a blister or leave it to heal by it's self. My trainer told me to tear the skin, drain it, and keep it clean and covered but it just seems like it would be better to heal itself.

Which one?

I was always told (have worked for doctors)
that you never pop a blister. The fluid
it is surrounding itself with is what is
keeping it protected. Natures bandaid!

Sometimes they will break on their own
just because of where they are located.
Your heel for example.

If that is the case then maybe your trainer
thinks breaking the blister and covering it
is better than it breaking, leaving you
with an open blister until you can get to
a place where you have the supplies to take
care of it. :)

If it does break, or you decide to break
it on your own, use the instructions Cux
gave in his answer. It will heal eventually
either way. You just want to avoid infection. :)

From there:

Step1
Clean the skin around the blister.
Step2
Place a doughnut-shaped piece of moleskin over the blister. This will keep pressure off it.
Step3
Try to avoid popping the blister unless it's in an especially awkward place, such as the bottom of your foot. The blister provides a sterile environment for the skin underneath. Breaking it makes the area more susceptible to infection.
Step4
If you need to pop the blister, use sterile implements, puncture it in a few places at its base and drain the fluid.
Step5
If you need to puncture it or if it breaks on its own, clean the area with soap and water or Betadine.
Step6
Avoid peeling any skin off the blister; this can lead to an infection and delay healing.
Step7
Cover the exposed blister with a thin layer of antibiotic ointment and dry sterile gauze.
Step8
Change the gauze regularly and watch for signs of infection, such as pus or redness.

Basically, don't pop it unless it's in a very awkward place.
