What is thumbnail abuse?

Thumbnail abuse is where a person, say on a social website who is sharing a video of a particular subject. Instead of showing a thumbnail of the video they'll instead post a thumbnail of something unrelated. Say for instance, I post a video of my car making a 50 foot burn out, on the thumbnail I post a picture of an airplane. The two are unrelated. Therefore, I've tricked you into believing that the video you are about to watch is of an airplane and not my hot rod. That is thumbnail abuse.

I'm guessing that the "thumbnail" is something that everyone sees about a video on YouTube- like a picture of some sort.

Apparently some people put pictures of women in bikinis on their videos just to get more views.

So it's "thumbnail abuse" when they do that, because the thumbnail is not what the video is actually about.
