I need to learn how to do it better. Ive done it once and I need some SERIOUS help. If anyone could give me some advice or point me in the right direction
My band needs me !

You don't have to emulate someone else, do what you can that sounds good with the music. If you absolutely feel you need to produce the sounds of Tom Waits doing a duet with a bear - you can always run your microphone through distortion. When I need to get really deep grainy sounds I use the transmitter from an old CB radio along with a yamaha stomp box. Any cheap microphone with a bad high range and a cheap distortion pedal - combined with an equalizer should treat you well in that situation.
