Can you get addicted second-hand smoking

Question Posted Friday May 23 2008, 6:07 pm

Lately i've been having really intense cravings for cigarettes but you see i've never smoked. Practically everyone in my family smokes though so i'm always breathing it in ever since i was little. I mean what should i do i mean i've never smoked so its not like i can go on the patch for something i haven't done. I mean is it even possible for me to have these intense cravings for something i haven't done? Or is it just my mind playing tricks on me or something?

Please help cause i think any day now i'm gonna cave and just light one.

One can become addicted to second hand smoke because smoke is what contains the nicotine. This can especially be true if someone in your family smokes something OTHER than lights. The high doses of nicotine in the air that you would inhale can cause you to want to crave a cigarette to fulfill that feeling.

I'd reccomend not going outside to chat with your family too often because that could eventually lead to you wanting a cigarette just to try it or getting addicted to second hand smoke which would lead to cigarettes anyway.

Unfortunately, you live in the situation, so not much can be done about it. All I'd recommend is don't start cigarettes if you can't deal with the fact you'll be having problems quitting years ahead.

i honestly don't think you can be addicted to second hand smoke. my theory is that you are feeling indirect pressure to smoke just because everyone in your family is smoking. if you don't want to smoke, simply don't do it.

You can't be addicted to cigarettes, there's no nicotine in second-hand smoke. You could be addicted to the smell, but that is just in your head. Don't second-hand smoke if you can help it, and definately don't start smoking for this reason, or else you will find out what real addiction is.

To be honest with you, I don't know if you can actually be addicted to second hand smoke.

I don't smoke, but I'm constantly around friends and family members who do. As much as I hate the habit, I've begun to enjoy the scent.

I can't honestly say that I have had cravings for the smoke, so I do not know if it's possible to be addicted to second hand smoke.

"Crack babies", babies whose mothers have smoked/done drugs while pregnant, are technically addicted to whatever drug their mothers had ingested. I don't see why, even though you're not smoking, you can't be "second-hand addicted" to cigarettes.

The best thing for you is to "quit" cold turkey. Try to refrain from being around people who are smoking. I understand how difficult it must be since you live with smokers, but try to just go outside while they're smoking - go for a walk or something.

I doubt that it's just your mind playing tricks. If you have to, try speaking with your parents. Don't light one - that will make it worse. Your addiction will grow if you actually smoke one for yourself. I don't know the hazards of taking addiction breaking medicine if you're not actually addicted. That is something you'll have to speak to your doctor and/or pharmasist about. Either one of them should have some ideas of what you can do to help.
