how do you know what your code is on bluetooth for your cell phone when you're trying to add device?

It's usually 1111 or 0000. If that doesn't work, call your cell phone provider.

you make up the code. you put in 3409 and the device your adding puts in the same number. so you make it up

You can make it whatever four digit number you want, as long as it is the same for both devices you are connecting. It's like security so you have to agree with someone before you connect by bluetooth.

Normally, your cell phone provider will let you know.
I think mine was something simple like 0000 or 1111 until they had me change it [if I even did...]

I am with alltel (whom I absolutely HATE!), anyway... when I received my bluetooth, they set it up for me right there in the store.

Talk to your cell phone provider, go into the actual store and have them help you right there.
