talking to people in high school

Question Posted Thursday May 8 2008, 4:28 pm

15/f
ive been trying to make more friends lately and..i suppose it's working. people are noticing me and i am talking more. however i have one BIG FEAR when it comes to talking 1 v 1...running out of things to say, and it seems to be so much harder to talk to people in high school because one day someone might be receptive, one day they aren't. or you might talk to someone who will turn around and start gossipping about you.

i feel like nobody talks about their interests anymore, it's always "she did this" and "he did that". and if there happens to be a (non-funny) convo about interests that dont involve gossipping (or the presidential elections..lol) the convo usually dies after like a minute or two.

i want to talk about something but at the same time..sound cool but not cool as in "im just passing time with you" but cool as in..not desperate for friends...help?

Well, good friendships are ones that do not have "awkward silences" Meaning if everything is quiet it isn't weird its just normal. I always found it hard to talk about my interests because they were different then others. But when you do find a topic that two people agree on it should be easy to just Talk about it. If you are talking about things you don't like or don't kow much about obviously it won't last long. And, its alwasy easy to talk about other people, or teachers, or the classess you guys are taking together or next semester, or grades. Don't talk about others if it isn't someone you trust, but when you do find a good group of friends who have things in common with you, you'll feel comfortable and talking will be easy. It's highschool and its good that you are trying to open up, just be yourself and by the way. its better to have a couple of REALLY good friends (who will stick by you) than have a bunch of friends who you don't really know and won't stick by you during those awkward silences. Hope I helped and if I didn't Im sorry!
