9/11 jumpers

Question Posted Monday May 5 2008, 11:49 pm

I'm confused. how come the firefighters didnt just put trampolines to catch the jumpers so they didnt all have to die? i know they werent prepared but after seeing dozens of people jump why didnt they? i cant imagine it.. i mean falling thousands of feet going at 150 mph.. which takes like 10 seconds from a high floor. and i hear that some people got killed from being hit by these jumpers.. can someone just explain to me how it was like and why they died when they hit the floor? and did their bodies totally break apart or pretty much stay intact? and what do you think was going through their minds as they were about to hit the ground or were about to jump? oh and why werent there hellicopters there to rescue people? i saw a vid on youtube where 2 people landed and it was a terrible racket.. its just the weirdest thought ever. please help.. and i hope this doesnt seem rude or anything. im 14 so when this happened i was only in first grade. then i thought it was funny, the thought of jumpers cause i couldnt imagine that at all. i didnt know they were actually dying and stuff.. and couldnt imagine how that could happen. thanks for the help btw. geez looking up all this 9/11 stuff now that i didnt know about sure is depressing.

Wow, lots of questions. Haha. Anyway, if you look into the laws of physics, there is a certain point where if you're a human falling through the air, your velocity gets to the point where you can't handle it and you die. So they would have died before they reached the trampoline (which wouldn't have been able to sustain that amount of velocity and weight... think of trying to stop a train with a trampoline). (Have you ever heard the urban myth that if you drop a penny off the Empire State Building, if it hits someone in the head it will surely kill them? That is also a product of velocity- even though it is a penny, it accelerates so quickly that it rips through anything in its path.) And 9/11 happened so fast that nobody knew what was going on and it wasn't entirely possible to really plan out the fact that people were jumping from the building. The towers collapsed very quickly after they were hit. As far as people getting hit by the jumpers, imagine getting hit by a train again. The jumpers most likely died before they hit the ground- it wasn't impact that killed them, it was physics. It would be very hard to know if their bodies were intact because of all the rubble and everything. I would be willing to guess no... the force of falling would have ripped at them, basically. Everything happened so fast that there was no way to save everyone, by helicopter or whatever. Besides that, there was so much dust/dirt in the air that nobody could see to get away or to go help people. It was just like big black clouds, and it was probably raining ashes too. Pretty scary. Imagine walking around in New York City and suddenly there are these loud noises, buildings falling down, people running/screaming, and big clouds of ash hurtling toward you. It's unreal.

No trampoline could take the weight of a human falling at that speed from that height. It would rip through as if it wasn't there.

A trampoline with a stronger material that could take the weight of a human would be strong enough that it would probably kill the person by itself.

Only those who jumped could answer the "what was going through their minds", maybe they were praying for their lives, and hoping they'll live? Or maybe they were praying for others.
As for the trampolines, that was a good idea, but keep in mind they needed as many firefighters as possible to go in and rescue and put out the fire. The city was just in complete chao's and their wasn't time to think things through clearly, all people could do was run for their lives, or literally dive in to help those in the buildings.

"How did they die when they hit the floor?"
Imagine falling from high up and hitting HARD CEMENT, it hurts enough just tripping and falling onto it, but falling from a high distance REALLY fast! It's a lot of trauma on the body. Personally I do not know how the body works when something like that happens, but I do know that there are parts of your body that if you break you can die instantly, like parts of your back, your neck, and if you get enough force to the chest it can stop your heart instantly.

Hope I helped.

ok think about what your saying...if someone is falling at that speed and from that height even landing on a trampoline would kill them. and the firefighters didn't know this was happening!! duh it happened waay to fast for them to do anything. And why werent there helicoptors? BECAUSE NO ONE KNEW IT WAS GOING TO HAPPEN. omg you need to at least know SOMETHING about the topic before you ask a question. im sorry but you sound ignorant. this was a horrible and terrible thing that happened to America and you know nothing about it. This is SAD!!! This is your country! This started the WAR we are in! please go pay attention at school or go to Google for goodness skaes! and im 14 too and i was in seocnd grade soo ya check your dates...
and ya not trying to be mean but i am completely shocked and annoyed at the fact that you know nothing about 9/11 but i did what to help you and clear some things up lol :]
