learning to play the acoustic guitar

Question Posted Thursday May 1 2008, 8:26 pm

So i'm on a mission, to get myself more musically involved, im sure you all agree to music is life, okay well my dream has always been to play the guitar, so i decided Im going to try, I was thinking about just buying a cheap acoustic from like Target, that way if I decided for some reason I don't like it, i didn't waste a lot of money, I'm a college kid without a job during the schcool year, so yeah... first of all what do you think of that, buying one of those cheap guitars to learn on? secondly (please don't judge me) I honestly have not a freaking clue on how to read music, i know thats horrible, how can i try without that, so does anybody know of a really good book to learn from, like musicc reading for dummies or something? i looked on amazon and stuff but there are soooo many and i have not a freaking clue, I'm overwhelmed by it all. oh and not like super expensive, again theres a big problem with money, but could you say ya, you'll be able to learn, and its easy to understand, cause i'm definately not the brightest crayon in the box. Anyway I really need somebody's help. Even if you think I'm ridiculous, but I really want to do this. please tell me what you think. Brutaly honest.
So im doing this right.. learn to read music, then learn how to play?

thanks for all your help

Okay, haha, well you defidently got the part on learning how to read music and then playing, but you can also learn the music while your playing if that makes sense. I've only been playing guitar maybe since december I think.
And I love it! For the cheap guitar thing, I guess that's okay but make sure the strings are good, and if you tune it make sure they're sturdy and they won't break. Also, I don't know if target is the greatest place to get one. My advice is to look for a guitar at a local music store, because then you can look for a cheap one, but if you don't find one, you can still always ask the sales person for a lot of advice.
As crazy as it is, most people who work at music stores know a thing or two about guitars(: also, when you start playing, it kind of depends on your string type, but you'll probobly get little calases (sp?) on the tips of your fingers, so don't stop playing if you fingers hurt really bad, because all that's happening is they're getting used to having all the pressure put down on them from the strings.
For the learning to read music, you could grab a "Guitar lessons for beginers" book or something. And it helps you a lot, and maybe if you have a friend or know someone who does guitar they can help you. Also, you can go on Ultimate guitar.com and look up things called "tabs" which is like, 6 lines with letters "e B G D A E" at the ends, and those letters are pretty much the names of the strings.
And then the numbers on the end are the frets. You can go on google and look up "Guitar frets" "Guitar tabs" and stuff to learn about it, also on You Tube there's A TON of people playing guitar, and theres chords and everything, you can go here to learn a really easy basic song : [Link](Mouse over link to see full location) and you can just copy her. (:
I know this is super long, but i hope something helped, Guitar is amazing, good luck. (:

I would say have a basic understanding of music theory before picking up a guitar. But who says you can't learn both at the same time? I've been playing for around 4 years and the first 2 I was teaching myself. I'd already had a basic understanding of how to read music which definitely helps.
My guitar book is the Berkley Basic Guitar by William Leavitt. It wasn't very expensive and it gives an overview of basic music theory as well.
If you are looking for music theory, there's another book I have that's all Music Theory lessons. It's called Harmony Lessons by John W. Schaum.
And yes, getting a cheap guitar is an excellent idea to start because you wouldn't want to buy an expensive guitar then come to find you don't want to play anymore. My guitar is very cheap lol because I didn't know whether I was going to stick with it or not at first.
Happy playing and good luck!
