My exboyfriend of 3 years and I just recently broke up a few months ago, he kept trying to get back into my life. Finally I broke down and had a talk with him, I let him know that I was no longer romantically interested in him, but that we could try being friends as long as he didn't interfere with my current boyfriend and I. He agreed and things gave gone great. It is awesome to have someone that you can talk to and that knows you that well, but it can also be a burden on your current relationship, so be wary.
This may not be the best suggestion for you though. If you feel as though there is just no way that you can have him in your life at all then you are probably just going to have to let him know that. Sometimes being nice to everyone just doesn't work out, no matter how bad you want it too.

Hope I helped!=)
