ovulation is the dispensal of an egg in a woman. The 24-28 days between periods is when ovulation occurs. Once the egg has not been fertilized, The blood in the uterus flushing out the egg (a period occurs).

In a nutshell, it's the release of an egg from the ovary. With human women this occurs about every thirty days. If the egg is not fertilized by the introduction of sperm, the egg is expelled from the body. The woman then has her period.
