I'd like to start by saying joining band does not by any means make you a nerd. Last year, the highschools first trumpet player (an amazing musician going to Eastman this year) was the quarterback on the varsity football team and prom king. Sounds a bit surreal, yes, but it's the truth. Now, on to learning! The best way, as the others have said, Is to find a teacher who knows what they are doing. You might have to spend some cash, but a professional teacher will proide results in the way you want a lot faster than your friends will. I highly encourage you to join the band, and talk to the director. They usually tend to be some of the nicer people working at your school. Good luck and happy drumming!

Are you talking about a trapset or about actual percussion in a band (like drumline)? Either way, it's a really hard instrument to teach yourself so I would advise that you find someone (one of your friends or somebody) who plays drums and get a few pointers from them. I'm not even a percussionist (I can play the drums) but even though I can hold down a beat, there are so many things that I don't know about it- like the different ways to hold the sticks. So here are some helpful sites:

But you will get the most help from somebody who can actually teach you. If you're thinking about joining a school band, then you would probably have to learn how to read drum music. It's pretty easy for me, but then again I've had ten years of classical piano. Good luck!

i played drums in elementary school. i went from trumpet to drums. best way to just get the beat down, listen to any song. try a fast song, or a rap, or punk song. listen for the drum, beat, and use a pencil to hit the drum when they hit it. and your foot to tap along.
