To make eyes appear larger, but still make it look completely natural, you really shouldn't rim your entire eye with eyeliner as it's suggested below. I have a friend that does this and, really, it makes her look like trailer trash. Believe it or not, it makes them look smaller with a bit bunch of black gunk around them.
I have brown eyes as well and when I wear make-up I tend to follow this site's advice (which I just found, but it pretty much explains what I do):
When you apply the light shade make sure to go from the inside of your lid and then slightly outward. A shimmery, creamy white (nothing big and bright and unnatural) is good for this because it will catch the light there. I like to dab a bit in the corner of the inside of my eyes.
