One click towards the dash should do the trick.
Lights, radio but no start up.

Some mechanics want you to that when they
are running diagnostics tests on the car
to check for problems or listen for fuel
pump noises. :)

i have an SUV, and in my car there is a sort of "halfway" before the engine turns over, and i can just turn that on if i want to listen to the radio or whatever. it runs on the battery when you do that. so be careful, because you can run your battery down. the next time you start your car, turn it slowly until just the lights and radio come on, and then you'll know how to do it :)

how many notches you have to turn depends on the car, but yes you turn the key only until the car ignition turns on (like the radio, ac, etc), not the actual engine.
