well, my answer may be kind of biased as i am also an ex-cutter and have used the rubber band method, but i think it is okay. i know a lot of people that use this method, and it's way better than cutting. if it is a good outlet for you then i think that is all that matters.

Im just going to start out by saying Your useage of pain as an outlet is not good. BUT thankfully you have found an alternative to cutting which as im sure youve heard time and time before is DANGEROUS! Honestly you could be doing alot worse to your body so ill just leave at this if rubberbands help keep doing it but try to ween yourself off...there are plenty of other ways to help get through what ever it is you are going through. Also take the time to ask yourself why you do it? and How you can stop it?...Trust me it can be stopped! If you ever need some one to talk to just email me!

I am too.
And I used the rubberband, and it really did help.
Here's the thing. It's still really bad for you, but it is so much better than cutting. When you cut, you could die or need serious medical treatment. Nothing too bad like that can really come from snapping the rubberband. So try really hard to stop using the rubberband, but make sure you always have one with you. Because if you don't and you feel like you really need to hurt yourself, chances are you'll go back and cut again, or do something like that.
See if you can go ten hours (or something) without snapping it one day. Try to raise it just a little higher the next day. See how that goes.

I'm an on and off cutter, and all I can say is the rubber band method didn't work for me at all.

But if it works for you, i'd say keep doing it. It's far less harmful to be addicted to the snapping of a rubber band than slicing a razor blade on your skin.

If you don't like being "addicted" to it, switch to another method, such as squeezing a frozen orange or putting your hands in ice water.

i hope i helped
