i love picking topics for research papers. pick something that you feel strongly about, no matter what it is. last year in one of my classes we had to do this huge research paper + powerpoint presentation, so i did it on music (but more specifically the legend of the crossroads in blues music). do you have any hobbies, are you interested in any professions? is there something that you really like that your friends may not know about? the reason i chose the topic that i did was because i knew that none of my friends would know about it, but it's an interesting story- and sure enough, after my presentation, my classmates told me that they had learned a lot. if you're presenting this, or if other people might read this, make it something unique that somebody will want to read. it doesn't necessarily have to be about something that you know a lot about- if you can find something that you're even vaguely interested in, then it will be really cool to do a research paper on it. here's what some of my friends have done in the past:

hypnotism
nuclear warfare
the titanic
forensic science
the holocaust
any of the old west outlaws (jesse james)

here are some more controversial topics that you can play around with:

There are so many things you can do. First pick a subject that targets what you like or dislike. I'll use myself as an example.
I really dislike;
-abortions
-drug abuse
-alcohol abuse
-physical abuse
-discrimination
-womanist [ohh if you did this you could say at the end, women can do whatever men can do but in tight shimmery outfits with high heels:]

I really like;
-television
-myspace [ohh maybe something on why it is so addictive]
-the internet
-fashion
ect. ect. ect. sky is the limit. be creative and have fun:]
