Color Contacts

Question Posted Wednesday January 16 2008, 1:43 pm

my friend has colored contacts and she only wears them when shes not wearing her glasses. I was wondering, is there such thing as colored contacts that you can wear every once in a while, even if you have 20/20 vision. if there is such thing, is it bad for your eyes? what could it do to your eyes? and how much money would they be?

the person under me is wrong. you CAN wear colored lenses (cosmetic lenses) but you must have a prescription. it is required by the FDA because the contacts need to be fitted to your eye so they do not cause health problems. they cant do anything to your eyes IF your eye doctor prescribes them to you. although, you can buy them online without a prescription, it is illegal, and those could cause health problems.

you sureee can wear color contacts with or without prescription.
so that means, that if you have perfect vision, you just get them without a prescription and it'll work.
its not bad for your eyes :)

Certainly. I work at an optometry office and we have people come in all the time who just want to change their eye color. It's slightly more of a complicated process than just you going in and they hand you a pair of contacts. I am not 100% sure how you do it at other offices, but we do ours like this:

1. Call and make an appointment telling them you want colored contacts but you don't have any visual impairment. Basically, you want to make an I&R (Instruction and Removal)
2. Show up for your appointment. (You would be surprised how many people think they can just skip this part.)
3. The optometrist will take measurements of your eyes, usually with a topographer.
4. More than likely they will have the trials in the office and will fit you for contacts then. You will more than likely be charged a fitting fee (usually ranging from $40 to $60)
5. You will be taught how to put them on and care of them.
6. The optometrist will see how they look in your eyes.
7. You will be taught how to remove them.
8. You will order a box of contacts in a 0.00 power. If they are smart, they will make you pay for them then so you won't just forget to pick them up for 5 months. (Trust me, it happens. A lot.) Um, really it just depends on what brand they order for you. I know we stock Fresh Look Colors and the Acuve tints. For one box, expect to pay $30-$35. In one box comes 6 multipacks. 3 pairs. Each pair should last you one month, unless you don't wear them everyday.
9. You pay and they should call you within a few days.

Sounds good? Contact me if you have any other questions. Oh gosh, what a pun.

you can get them even if you don't need them but you will still need to get a prescription from an eye doctor. they won't really hurt your eyes as long as you take care of them and you clean them and keep them moist. if you don't misuse them they are harmless.

You can get non prescription contact lenses. You have to go through your optometrist, though.
No, they won't harm your eyes as long as you keep them cleaned like you're supposed to.
The price varies.
