Bigger people burn more calories just by staying alive. A large person may burn 3000 calories a day just to keep their organs working. A small person, by comparison, may only burn 1500. If you eat more than that and don't exercise it off, you will gain weight; and vice-versa.

You can see, then, that large people have to do less to lose weight. They can eat more than small people and exercise less. If they go on diets designed for small people, they will lose weight much faster; maybe even faster than it would be healthy.

The first part of excess fat is water. When you work out, the water weight is lost through sweat. Once you don't have a lot of excess fat, and therefore less water weight, it becomes harder to take the weight off.
