I bought a lot of songs on itunes. most of them worked but some of them never downloaded. when i try to buy them it says i have already bought them and i need to check my downloads. how can i get my songs back?

You should a. check your account to see if each song was charged, b. look in your purchased file for them, c. do a search in your search bar for the song/artist/album and d. check your e-mail inbox for the receipts for the songs. If worst comes to worst, you can always give Apple Customer Service a ring to sort it all out, but you'll need the receipts and you'll need to let them look in your account themselves to try to recover the purchases.
