Question Posted Sunday December 30 2007, 10:46 pm

I've just started learning to play guitar, and I'm kind of getting the hang of it, but my fingers hurt like crazy. anyone know a way to make my fingers callus over faster? I've heard rubbing them with alcohol helps, but i dunno. any tips?

Here are some tips I found:

"Sore fingers are sometimes due to an improperly adjusted guitar, but more often than not stem from excessive finger pressure. Here's how to find the minimum finger pressure: Place your finger against the string (next to the fret), but don't press it down to the fret. Pluck the string. You should hear a muffled sound. Continue plucking and slowly increase the pressure until the string begins to buzz. Hold the pressure there--let it buzz. The pressure needed to maintain the "buzz threshold" is very small. Now, press just hard enough to stop the buzz and break into a clear tone. This small amount of pressure--a few grams--is all the pressure you need when playing!"

"Put some ice in a bowl of water and soak your fingertips for a minute or so. You can also run cold water over your fingertips at the tap. This will prevent blisters and speed up the building of calluses. It will also prevent your calluses from becoming too hard or from having hard edges.

Note: don’t do this until your fingertips hurt and be sure to allow some time before you play again. You don’t want to play on pads that have been softened by the soaking."
