The person below gave a great answer, but left one thing out, which I think is an essential concept you're missing.

The hardware your computer came with is not upgradeable itself; you need to buy new parts. It sounds to me like you want to upgrade your 512 mb chips to 1 gb chips, without actually changing the hardware. It's not like you can buy software to change them; they are what they are.

You can use any DDR2 533 type RAM. These meet your specifications:

PC2-4200 and PC2-4300 are not the same, but they are compatible.

To change your RAM, UNPLUG your computer and open it. If you opened it on the correct side, you will see this, your motherboard:

See the long black narrow things? They will be filled with your current RAM. RAM looks like this:

Touch something grounded(metal) to antistatic yourself. A static shock to the RAM will completely ruin it forever. Every time before you touch RAM, do this.

You want to push down the white tabs, and your RAM will pop out. Carefully remove your RAM and give them to a computer enthusiast, who will certainly have use for them. You could also sell them.

Take your new RAM and carefully push it into the slots. It only goes in one way. If you try to put it in the other way, the white tabs won't close. If you force it, you will break it and set your computer on fire. There will be some resistance, though, even when you put it in the correct way.

After that your computer should start the same as before. You will notice it's 2x faster.

Good luck!
