Too shy to talk to him

Question Posted Thursday November 29 2007, 7:57 pm

There's this guy in my Spanish class who I really want to talk to. I'm a freshman and he's a sophomore. He's really smart, funny, good at guitar, and cute. I can't say I'm in love because I've never talked to him, but it's like a little crush. I've been dying to talk to him since September and I still haven't said anything. I'm so scared that he'll think I'm a stupid freshman and he'll think I'm weird. A lot of people say he's nice though. What should I do? Please don't say, "Just go up and say hi." I can't do that. I guess I need some sort of an excuse.

I never understood why so many people say 'just go up and say hi' either, because thats just awkward isn't it? XD

Look for an opening.

Wait for him to be doing something that you can relate to, or talk about. For example, if you like reading and he is sitting nearby in class reading a book just ask him what hes reading. When he tells you the title ask him if its good. That kind of thing is your excuse - You just have to see how that sort of thing goes.

If you really aren't close to him(distance wise) it will be more difficult to find that sort of moment to talk to him. =X Maybe if you have a common friend you could walk up to friend while they're talking to him and see how it goes from there? Its difficult to tell you much else because I don't know your schedule and stuff.

Oh, and any sophomore who thinks freshmen are stupid or immature are total idiots. A year is not that big of a difference and anyone who would treat you as less than you are for your grade isn't worth talking to.

Do you sit near him in Spanish? Maybe you could use the class as an excuse to talk to him - ask him if he understands whatever you're doing, and maybe make a joke, and then go from there. It's easier, though, if you have common ground to speak about at first. If you really need an excuse to talk to him - and I understand, I'm the EXACT same way - then definitely use something you're doing in Spanish as a starter. If he's a nice guy, he won't think you're a stupid freshman just because you said something to him. Take a chance, and maybe things could go really well!! Good luck!
