The reason you get that answer is because you cannot target fat loss to a specific area of the body. There is a lot of misinformation going around on this point (things like doing crunches to lose stomach fat, etc.). Humans are unable to do this.

The only way to lose weight is to have a negative calorie balance induced either by eating less or exercising more. As one can deduce, cardio, sports, and full body routines which burn more calories are more effective in this respect than area specific exercises.

Doing things that target an area will have two effects. You may build muscle on the area, and it may tighten it up a bit making it look as though you have shed some weight. However fat loss emphasis is determined by genetics unfortunately. All we can do is decide to lose or gain weight.

As for how to eat healthy, here are some quick tips. Eat frequent meals every 3- 4 hours. Eat balanced meals (moderate on carbs and proteins, low on saturated fats). Aim to eat about 500 calories less than you burn. Stick to nutritious non processed foods (e.g. chicken, tuna, lean meats, cottage cheese, rice, whole wheat bread, veggies, fruits, etc). Drink plenty of water.

Its not a lot more complicated than this. A steady cario (e.g. stair machines, jogging, eliptical, etc) of over 20 minutes done 3 times a week or so will keep your heart healthy. If you are able you can of course do more. However it is your diet that will make or break your efforts.

Good luck.
