I'm horribly afraid of the dentist!!!

Question Posted Friday November 23 2007, 12:24 am

i'm 17 years old.. and i've never had cavities my whole life.
i never had any work done at the dentist's office. At my last check up i found out that i needed a couple of fillings done. and when i went to get them filled, i freaked out and wouldn't let them near my mouth. i've heard that fillings are not a big deal but i can't help it. it's been awhile since i found out i had cavities and i'm worried they might've gotten worse. Please dont give me any scary facts i just suppose i need a pep talk. haha.
thank you so much.

Hahah, I'm the SAME way! I've never liked the dentist. I used to never have cavities then one day it was like POOF.
My dentist tells me that I was born with naturally crappy enamel (the stuff that keeps your teeth nice) so I'll probably get a lot of cavities no matter how much I brush, floss, and use mouthwash.

Cavities really aren't that bad to get filled. The only part that still freaks me out is the sound of the tools they use. Lucky for me my dentist office relocated and they now have tv's in the office that you can watch as they work on your teeth.

If your dentist office doesn't have anything like that ask them if it would be okay to listen to your Ipod/CD player to keep your mind off of what they're doing. If not then just close your eyes, memorize a song before you go, and continuously repeat the lyrics in your head. That's what I used to do. If I couldn't see/hear/focus on what they were doing then I was okay.

What would be worse is if you don't let them fix the problem. Cavities suck and it's better to just get them filled and get them over with. I've probably had about 4 total teeth have cavities but because my enamel sucks, my teeth don't hold fillings well so they fall out and I have to get them re-filled. It's a real pain in the butt, but I'd rather get them filled then deal with the sensitivity and pain that results from the cavity.

Go to the dentist, don't concentrate on what's happening, and before you know it the procedure will be over.

I am seriously the best person to talk to about phobias because I have TONS of them. Clowns, shots/needles, I swear something lives under my bed/in my closet and WILL get me if I don't jump into my bed when it's light's out. I'm so strange and just let me know if you have any other worries, I can be of good help =].
