Why add people you don't? Facebook is very personal. People see your full name, your school/network, etc. It isn't safe to add anybody that you don't know.
As long as you know them in person (or your friends or family know them in person) it would be okay to add them.
I don't see the point in adding anyone unless they're your friend those. Sites such as myspace and facebook should not be popularity contests; they should be ways to keep in touch with FRIENDS.
People wonder why kids get hunted down and searched because of their online profiles - it's not the websites fault, it's the fault of the person who gives personal information to those they don't know. Or they make it so those they don't know can easily access personal information.
