Question Posted Sunday November 18 2007, 11:14 pm

16/f

I'm asking this for a friend who is 17/f. Okay, when she was little, her mom stole her identity to get bills paid and ended up messing up her credit so now she's fucked when she's older. She can't get anything under her name because nobody will accept her. She doesn't want to depend on her boyfriend, so is there any way she can possibly get her credit back to normal?

This is more towards adults. Thank you!

This is very, very easy....yet the hardest thing in the world. Her mom was an adult, life is hard..hard for everyone. I have a lot now, but it wasn't always the case. A parents job is to make life better for their child. Think about that...what does that even mean? That means she had struggles, AND THUS, she SHOULD work her butt off to make sure her child doesn't. Adding to her child's struggls...ARE YOU KIDDING?? Its easy, exploit your unfortunate situation to get yourself back to level. If you can do it without hurting your mom...GREAT! IF not, you don't owe your mom, she owe'd you. Your mom makes me sick to be honest, maybe she had a reason...but no reason could be good. There is always a different path she could have taken. This was just easier....for her and ONLY her. Some people are just bad for you, cut her off. Either she ACTUALLY loves and will understand your actions, so she will understand. OR, your mother isn't really a good person and yet again she will only care about herself and be mad you just SIMPLY want a FAIR shot at life. Don't take on a horrible life b/c your mother couldn't handle her's. Life is tough, you have to fight for yours to be good, before you can fight for others.

well like the other people below me said ... if she was under 18 she could get the companies in trouble. She could get her mom in trouble as well. but as for her credit. she might have to get a credit card with a yearly fee in it. Here is what i did.

Get a bank account. Keep it in good standing for at least a year. That will help. If she does manage to get a credit card of any kind ... buy like one thing a month and pay it all the way off each bill. Dont do what i did and see it as having an extra 500 or whatever in your pocket. Cuz now i have 2 credit cards at their limits and am having troble paying them off. So she has to be careful with credit cards. But it will take a long time ... maybe years ... to get her credit back up. Hell, it took me almsot 2 years just to get credit established!

If you ask me she really should try and get her mom and the companies in trouble. Hell...its identity theft. If she can prove it wasnt her but some onestealing her identity...it will be much easier to fix :D

Slowly but surely, yes.

There are always credit cards that will extend you credit. Find the lowest percentage you can on interest and buy things, pay them mostly off, and then pay the last 50 or 100 the next month. You get better credit for being consistent over long periods. You can slowly build positive history.

Theres also always the option of taking her mom to court, but I imagine thats not going to happen.

This is a trick question, right?

I ask this because minors can't enter into a contract, so unless your 17 year old friend was really 18+ years olds, she doesn't have much to worry about.

Credit reports show a history. If you're friend really is 17, then all she needs to do is dispute the bad credit and show she was under 18 when credit was extended to her.

BTW, even if a person had no blemishes on their credit by the time they were 18, it's almost impossible to get unsecured credit. Companies know that 18 year olds don't normally have a source of income require a co-signer. Me, I got my 1st credit card only after getting a co-signer. After a year, I still couldn't get a unsecured card so I got another card that was secured with a bank account. After a year of that, I was finally able to get unsecured credit.
