also---

what does: "The zipper displaces the button and a man lacks just that much time to think while dressing at dawn, a philosophical hour, and thus a melancholy hour."

mean?

The quote you provided is basically saying that as we replace things that take time (such as buttoning a button) with more efficient things (like a zipper) we lose the time we once had to stop and think. One of the recurring themes on Fahrenheit 451 is speed- how quickly everyone moves from one acitivty to another, to the point that everything is just a blur.
