Bergy413 answered Sunday October 7 2007, 2:58 pm: well, some people say "left is right and right is wrong" (meaning straight and homosexual), but that only applies to guys i believe. but don't worry, its fine on either ear. [ Bergy413's advice column | Ask Bergy413 A Question ]

This made finding other people to date really difficult - emotionally and physically. The community developed a whole host of ways to tell other gay people that they were gay.
I think this is probably where the whole piercing on various sides thing to come from. It doesn't really carry any significance today - particularly as cartilage piercing was not around when these symbols were used!

What does that have to do with ears? Just ignore that piece of stupid superstition. [ missbananafontana's advice column | Ask missbananafontana A Question ]
