what drugs really do....

Question Posted Saturday September 29 2007, 9:49 pm

I recently saw a movie about drug abuse and crap like that and then I got interested in what happens in real life and not in the movies, and Im not about to try it myself to find out so by WHAT scientists have proven what really happens when someone takes medicine when they aren't suppose to? I mean like WHAT happenes to them? WOULD they get sick or die or what? Theres so much stuff on t.v. about what happens and stuff but then theres stuff that says its completley different. And HOW do you know when your high?
((i put capps on the first words of the questions so that you can tell where the actual question is becuase when i reread it i got kinda confused XP!!)) thanx....

I wont detail drug experiences. The curiosity you're showing means you will most likely seek them out on your own time. The unfortunate side effect of making something evil mainstream is that it creates sub culture and subculture breeds curiosity.

I digress.

In real life a variety of things happen.

Some people do drugs and are just fine. Propaganda would have you believe otherwise, but the simple fact is that many people do drugs and are successful. George W smoked pot and did coke. Robin Williams did a number of things.

The reasons people are able to do these things and still be successful varies.

Some people are just that much in control. They can allow themselves vices because they dont allow those vices to control or hurt their lives.

Some people have protection. Lindsey Lohan is a public figure. Instead of throwing her in prison, shes on probation in rehab. She has both enough social standing (fame) and enough money to guarantee that her life isnt completely fucked by something that would destroy another persons life.

Then you have people on the other end of the spectrum. People who are addicted. Who OD. People who spend all their money on Coke and move on to progressively cheaper and more dangerous drugs. People who simply smoke pot all day and work to have enough money to go home and smoke, never getting anywhere in life.

These people lack either the control to manage their habits, or the protection to keep them from hurting themselves.

The common theme here is addiction. Thats what drugs do to you. Especially in light of all the new information about drugs, thats easily available if you know where to look, deaths because of actual overdoses, things like that are much rarer.

However, in many cases it is the addiction that does the most damage to your life, rather than the drug.

Please dont mistake the above to mean that drugs cannot be exceedingly dangerous. Depending on the drug there are any number of possible severe physical side effects. And no, I wont give you which ones and what they can do to you. Thats not info for this website.

Have you ever heard the phrase "all things in moderation?"

This phrase exists because humans have a finite amount of energy. If one thing becomes your overwhelming first priority that takes all of your energy, you let the rest of your life go. Relationships, personal health, responsibilities.

The reason drugs are always put upon is primarily because most drugs are somewhat to severely addictive.

Some drugs are like pot. You wont go through serious withdrawls, but you will miss the habit, the easy relaxation it often brings. And for most people it has a severe negative impact on motivation.

Other drugs (many of the hard ones) cause physical problems because your body gets used to operating with it in your system and if you stop supplying it your body begins to go through withdrawls, which basically can make you very sick for a very long time.

I know this is long. Sorry.

Ill tell you right now, Movies and TV are Movies and TV. The way that anything (including drugs) is portrayed in them is usually quite far off the mark. Sometimes things arent as bad as they show, sometimes theyre worse.

Id point you to a list of good resources, unfortunately none of them are appropriate to list on this website.

My last piece of advice. If you dont know exactly what anything is going to do to you, dont touch it. If you cant find out, dont touch it.
