If you haven't set up a wireless access point in your home, I doubt you'll get a signal at all.
To set up an access point which broadcasts internet access, you need to buy a wireless router. Any one will do, I recommend this model: [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
It uses your existing internet connection to broadcasts; in other words, it "splits" your internet connection into 4 "hard" connections and an unlimited number of wireless connections.
Most new laptops have WiFi capabilities built in, and will detect signals automatically. If your's doesn't, you can buy one of these: [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
For a desktop computer, you can use anything here: [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
Hard-wired connections are always faster and more stable, so you should use that when possible
If you're running your own access point you don't pay any additional recurring fees, because it's already using your existing internet connection.
If you're using someone else's, they decide. About 1/4th are completely free, 1/4th are a one-time fee, and 1/2 are part of large networks that you do pay a recurring fee for. I'm not counting private, password-protected signals.
