Self-taught piano

Question Posted Friday September 21 2007, 12:14 pm

How realistic is it to want to self-teach yourself to play the piano?

As in, learning how to read music as well not just actually play?

realistic, but challenging. I learned guitar (which is fairly similar to piano in terms of musical theory) and I had problems with teaching myself reading and things like that. A teacher may give you an example that brings it all into focus, whereas if you're alone you have to just figure it out. It's possible, but I would recommend learning to play fairly well, then finding a teacher for theory.

it's realistic...I'm self-taught on the piano...but I already played 3 other instruments...there are beginner books and theory books that will help you learn how to play...but it's much more realistic if you already know how to play other instruments...it will come much easier for you.

It is very realistic. Look for a beginner piano book for adults and read through that. I self taught myself how to play the piano three summers ago, and I still remember what I learned. It takes a lot of patience, but it is very rewarding - just make sure to practice everything over and over again. Hope that helped and good luck.
