What's the best way to quickly lose about 15-25 pounds? (by November) I can't afford anything like Slimfast but I need to lose this weight for something important. (Not just a stupid school dance or something, trust me it's importnat) I'm fine with gaining the weight back, I just need to lose it now.

Alin75 answered Thursday September 13 2007, 2:38 pm: Well I wont give you advice on how to lose weight in an unhealthy way, even if you are willing to gain it back. Part of the reason is that quick methods often digest your muscle, so you end up looking worse than you should. However, with proper discipline, you can lose up to 2 pounds a week or so. That will bring you close at least (on target if its the end of November).
Here are some diet tips:
- Eat frequent balanced meals, about 4- 6 a day, generally eating every 3- 4 hours. Divide your calories almost evenly across these meals, eating somewhat larger meals before periods of activity and somewhat smaller meals afterwards.
- Drink plenty of water
- Keep carb portions moderate, minimise saturated fats, usually found in most animal products (such as fatty meats and cheeses), cheap oils, junk foods, etc. Eat a small amount of essential fatty acids with each meal (found in fish, nuts, good oils like olive and canola, etc.)
- Examples of balanced meals include: 1. skinless chicken breast or skinless turkey breast or tuna or lean beef, 75 grams of rice or a potato or 50g pasta, and a small salad with olive oil 2. 200 grams of cottage cheese, an apple, and a small handful of unsalted nuts 3 A whole egg and two egg whites (scrambled for example), a slice of whole wheat bread and some veggies 4. oats in skim milk and a few unsalted nuts.
- Avoid processed foods. Focus on wholesome foods and fresh vegetables and fruit.
- Avoid empty calories from junk foods, things that have sugar added to them, etc. Read the labels.
- Eat a few hundred calories less than you burn. In practical terms this should leave you a little bit hungry during the day. You should never be really hungry or starving.
Now onto exercise.
I dont know what you do now, but you need to work in regular cardio. If you have the discipline the most effective thing is to do the cardio in the morning before breakfast. Later is fine too, but this is the most effective.
Work in say 20- 30 minutes of steady cardio workouts every second day. This can be more frequent, but it depends on your fitness level and whatever else that you do (e.g. other gym workouts, sports etc). Good cardio workouts include stair machines, jogging, biking, some sports (the kind where you have to keep running, like soccer for example), etc.
You can also supplement with some resistance training (e.g. weights) if you have the time. This will help minimise the amount of muscle lost and it has a positive effect on the metabolism.
Whatever you do however, for the next few months cardio is a must if you want optimal results.
