What are the differences?

I thought off guard means shocked? What does off guard mean?

Well, it can mean shocked. Actually, I have a great example for you:


So today, I was in class sitting next to the kid I like, when my friend goes, "He knows you like him." It caught me really off guard. I wasn't neccessarily shocked, I was more confused and not at all expecting it. But that's another story ;]


I guess it has different meanings for different people, but for me it means that something came out of nowhere, and you weren't ready for it and you don't really know how to respond. When someone is caught off guard, I get the feeling they're like, "Where did that come from?" Rather than, *Gasp* "How shocking!"
