2 questions in one: (publishing a book/ starting a business)
ok so i have an idea for a book that i really want to make but i dont know how to apply it..... i mean make the book more than just an idea....
how do you present the book to a publisher. and before that where do i start in making it....its not a novel its more full of pictures and stuff and activities and things to do for teens and tweens.
another thing if i am a good artist how do i illustrate the book? do i draw and print everything then take it to a printer and make a sample (its going to cost me a fortune to show my final result as i imagine it and i dont have that kind of money. as i've said the book isnt just pages :s).....
how does this process usually go?
-----------------
the second thing is if i have something, a product , i created and i want to sell it it what do i do. i don't want to go door to door. oh plus i mean i have to make it first to advertise it right.... well i was watching oprah the other day and she got this lady who invented something called spanx.... why did she need 5000 dollars!!?? and what did she do after she made the spanx, where did she go to start her company?
And for the second thing, I dont know what to tell you about getting people to sell it. But for advertising, that's simpler. You would have to like, make a commercial or advertisement or something, then you have to call a TV station or magazine or whatever to advertise. It's really expensive, though. Then you might want to hire someone to "beta" it which is look over it, give opinions, suggestions, and critisim. It's important to do this. Then, you need to pick out publishing companys and mail them a manuscript of your book. That's usually just a paper bound copy with a letter included from yourself(I would put the illustrations on special paper). You'll want to send it to publishers who are geared to making books for the age group you are trying to sell to, and send to many different ones. Most will not just pick up your book.
It has to be a serious effort, and be extremely proffessional. If you are a young person, don't include that in your letter. It may bias them into thinking you aren't mature enough to write and produce a quality book.
After all this, don't be dissapointed if your book isnt picked up. Thats usually the case with many books.
Good luck!
In response to your comment: You will have to make seperate manuscripts of the book for publishing companies, they won't fund those things right off the bat. It's a small price to pay for the money you would make if your book was picked up. [ DearAbby92's advice column | Ask DearAbby92 A Question ]
