Weight and Period??

Question Posted Wednesday August 29 2007, 6:23 pm

My period is a few weeks late. I've been stressing out because I haven't gotten it. I am a virgin, but I never missed my period before. Does anyone know how much underweight you should be to skip or have a late period?? I'm in the 5'7-5'9 height range & I'm between 118-120 lbs. The thing is, a year ago I weighed approximately 158 lbs. I've gotten my period every time though, so I'm not sure why I'd skip it now. I get random cramps & ovary pain, but not my period. Also, a few weeks ago I had brown spotting but it stopped after a few hours. Do you think its because I'm underweight?? I have a doctor's appointment, but not until September. Does anyone have any ideas?? Thanks!!

I don't think you are underweight enough to skip a period, though you really do need to look at your diet and see why you are underweight because it seems you are heading towards health problems if you don't stop the loss now.
Anyway, missing periods can be caused by all sorts of things. I was chronically late. Actually still am. Turns out I have Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. Had I talked to my doctor sooner, I wouldn't have had to go through surgery and everything just to stop the pain.
I am not saying this is the cause of your problem. Teens often have irregular cycles. Stress can cause skipped periods, as can diet and exercise changes.
Even though it is normal for a teen to miss a period here and there, it is still something you will want to ask your doctor, since you already have an appointment. Whenever you already have an appointment, you should bring up all the concerns you have, no matter how petty they may seem. Sometimes a bunch of small problems are really symptoms of one big problem and only your doctor will really be able to put it all together. Your doctor is getting paid to take care of you. There is no reason to not tell him or her that you are having a problem, even if it is something that you are told is normal. (of course, if you didn't have an appointment, I'd tell you to wait and see if it happens again, then call a doctor for an opinion. But you are already going and already paying the doctor, so bring it up!)

A change in eating habits definitely alters when you get your period. So don't worry about it. Irregular periods are perfectly normal for teenagers, so I wouldn't even bring it up at your doctor's appointment.
