to find out about different guitars, you can go to these websites:
fender.com
gibson.com
ernieball.com
fender, gibson, and ernie ball make really great electric guitars. they each have their own look and sound. probably the most well known look is the fender stratocaster, which they will have pictures of on the fender website (i'm just giving you the website because it's easier than linking to fifty thousand pictures).
takamine.com
mguitar.com
taylorguitars.com
takamine, cf martin & co, and taylor are acoustic guitar makers. takamine makes a really great product.
i'm not sure if you have an acoustic or an electric or both, but here's how you tell on an electric what kind it is- look at the headstock (the thing at the end with the six tuning pegs sticking out of it, if you were holding the guitar vertically it would be the top) and the brand name should be on there. it is with the more widely accepted brands. if the name isn't on there, your guitar is probably a beginner guitar (referred to by the pros as "piece of crap"). if you have an acoustic guitar, it should say on the headstock and/or inside the actual guitar if you look in the sound hole.
if you have a camera or a picture of your guitar, you can upload it and send me a link to my inbox and i might be able to identify it :)
as for the playing, there are tons of videos you can get from music stores, and if you haven't played an instrument before, those are great. lessons are also really great. but here is a website that has a lot of good information on it too:
[Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
and if you want to play a song that you have like on your ipod, then you can google guitar tabs for that song. it is easy to read tabs, and pretty soon you will be learning all your favorite songs :) "hey there delilah" is a good song to start out with.
