I don't know what's wrong with me, but whenever I want to try tampons, I get so scared and tense.
I can't even get the applicator inside of me... it's just, when something (tampon, finger) touches my vagina, I have this weird feeling and it's not good. I tried a tampon yesterday and I was just so scared, I couldn't even get the applicator in. Then a few hours ago, I tried again and this time I got so scared I broke down crying. I've had my period for 1 year and i've always used pads. I play volleyball and I am just so sick of pads. Also, my friends use tampons and they play with me. I'm starting high school and we have lockers, I really do not want my friends and other people to see me using pads. I know that I should't care what other people think, but it's not only that. I hate the feeling of pads... I want to try tampons soooo badly because i've heard that it's a million times better than pads. But I can't get the courage to push it into my vagina. Right when it touches me, ugh... i can't even explain it. If it helps, I've always been scared of needles and blood. That's why i'm never becoming a doctor. So any of you advicenators have any good advice for me?? Please don't tell me to stick with pads, because I am just so disguisted of them. I need advice on how to calm my self down when I try tampons, and how not to be scared. I know that they can't get lost... but I just start freaking out when it touches me. The thought of putting something inside of them... it just makes me dizzy and gross. Please help! I have a big tournament coming up and I would like to start using them by then. Thank you a ton

That is a plastic applicator, however she is right that playtex gentle glide has a smaller applicator and is much easier to put in. The playtex sport super tampon is bigger than the gentle glide superplus tampon, well the applicator is, so you can see that it is much bigger. I would go out and buy playtex gentle glide regular absorbency to start. Now for putting it in, I just recently started using tampons this year and I am entering highschool as well. The first time I was pretty freaked out, but I just told myself that the outcome would be good. I recommend laying on your bed or the floor to start because it's much easier than standing up to get in. Also, just try and think of something else because once it's in you wont be able to feel it. The first couple of trys you may not get it in correctly, but that's okay. Now, I got it in on my second try, but I know some people who took like 15 trys to get it right. Not Kidding. Maybe being on the phone with a friend while you are doing it might help ease your fears. I dont know why you have such a fear of tampons, but you really are going to have to get over that because when you get older and go to the gynecologist they are going to stick there fingers inside you to give you an exam, but in time I'm sure you'll mature and get over this fear. You may honestly not be ready for tampons if you get that freaked out, but if you're want is stronger than your fear then you can overcome it.

Listen to your ipod, sit on the toilet with your pants and underwear at your knees, and your legs spread, and wait until you feel calm and relaxed. Close your eyes and just imagine the annoying feeling of pads while playing volleyball, don't even think about it, and then just get it over with. Try a couple times if you can't get it..I couldn't get one in the first time I tried but the second time was fine. [ amarand's advice column | Ask amarand A Question ]
