i just got the enV but i can never tell how many bars i have because theres a symbol blocking it

how can i tell?

I have the enV & you can easily see the bars in the right hand corner. What kind of symbol is it?? I've never heard of that before. Did you try checking the instructional booklet it came with?? Look through that & if you still can't find anything on it, call Verizon or visit the FAQ section on their website.

The symbol probably shouldn't be there though.
