What does, "Keep your friends close, but your enemies closer" mean? I never really understood it.

Keep your friends close- you can trust them.
Keep your enemies closer- can't trust them. you have to keep them closer because you would want to know if they're planning something against you or something...

It means that you should keep your friends close to you, but your enemies closer, so you can know their every move.. so like you'll be closer to your enemies so that you will know if they are planning something against you.
