horse questions

Question Posted Thursday August 2 2007, 8:15 pm

You answered my question about owning a horse earlier today, and i really liked your answer. You really seem to know your stuff, so I decided to ask you a few more questions=]

You said depending on what the horse is going to be doing, it may or may not need shoes. My horse is going to be for mainly western pleasure riding(trails and such). Would it be a good idea to put shoes on him, or is that not nessicary for trail horses?

I'll probably have a few more for you, but this is all i can think of at the moment.

thanks so much!

If the horse has really good feet, it probably won't need shoes for trail riding. You should consult your farrier about this, though. Some horses have brittle or sensitive feet, and almost always need shoes put on them. Breeds such as Mustangs, Norwegian Fjords, and Appaloosas are known for having really good feet, and normally don't need shoes. My gelding was really succeptable to thrush, and always needed shoes. Some horses only need shoes during certain times of the year. My friend shoes her horses in the spring & summer, but leaves them barefoot for fall & winter. Some people like to put shoes only on the front feet. It really depends on your individual horse, and your farrier and/or trainer (if you have one) should be able to advise you on this.
