The usual time period is 10-14 days. If your sore throat persists after 14 days, you should go back to the doctor to see if there is anything they can give you. You may be recovering, but mono can stay in you for months. The doctor gave me 8 weeks. I've been going out with my friends/family regularly, but I get extremely tired. When you do go out, pace yourself. If you get tired, rest awhile or go home. Seriously, even though it is summer, mono can relapse & you could have it up to 6 months. You definitely don't want to miss school. Your body will ache too & your spleen could be enlarged. My spleen is enlarged & it used to bother me when I slept. For your throat, try drinking as many fluids as possible. Ice cream & ice pops really help. I would also suggest soup & jello. One thing though, do not take Amoxicilian. It's for throat pain. It totally cured my sore throat, but I broke out into a nasty rash all over me. So avoid Amoxicilian. Do not take any pain killers unless prescribed by a doctor. I was also told to avoid tylenol. You could schedule an appointment to talk with him/her though. Basically avoid medications unless they are prescribed. Mono is a virus that has to be worked out on its own. Rest & drink plenty of liquids.
Volleyball2150 answered Wednesday August 1 2007, 6:34 pm: hey,
well I had mono. Yeah it does suck! Well to tell you the truth, I didn't even get a sore throat. i was just sooooo tired all the time. so my dad took me to the doctor and they found out that I had mono. But If I were you, try taking Nyquil Day and Night. The day one helps you so you don't get so stuffy and groggy, and the night one helps you sleep better. If your mouth is dry, then try drinking a lot of liquids. Try to stay away from liquid that can make you even more thirsty, like milk, sports drinks, lemonade etc. I would drink Water or Tea if I were you.
Whatever you have been doing, it seems to help your immune system because for me it took me 1 month for it to go away. But here's the thing, my relatives are professional doctors and they said that mono doesn't go completely away when you feel better. They say that it takes a few months for your body to completely heal and healthy.
But for all of the other annoying pain, just take a medicine that helps. Like advil, ibuprofen, nyquil, tylonol etc.
Just be careful what you take and only take as much as the directions say. Oh and also make sure you don't mix the medicines together. it can have very bad side effects!!
