Here's my issue: My Gateway laptop won't turn on! I just got it this past Christmas (so it isn't old).
I'll push the button to turn it on and everything will be normal, but when it gets to the screen that says "Windows XP," it just stays there and will go no further.
I updated Ad-Aware last night and I did a scan, so I really doubt I have a virus... Does anyone know what I should do?

You'll get a menu, use the arrow keys to select "safe mode" and press enter(if you don't get a menu, tap F8 really fast on startup). Text will scroll down the screen and your computer could freeze for up to 20 minutes. Sign into your regular user account. Click "yes" on the box that comes up. Go to start, run. Type:
msconfig
and press ok. Select "diagnostic startup", press ok, and restart. It should now start, but your computer will be severely limited. Follow my guide here to fix the problem from this point: [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
If you can't get into safe mode, I would give up and reinstall windows. I can give you instructions on how to backup your data without windows, if you have really important data on it(ask me a private qustion)
If you can get into safe mode, but changing to "diagnostic startup" doesn't work, I would go to the F8 menu and select "safe mode with networking", backup all of my data online, and then reinstall windows. There are a few things you can try at this point, but I usually wouldn't bother, since they rarely work. [ theymos's advice column | Ask theymos A Question ]
