changing ratings

Question Posted Saturday July 14 2007, 3:20 pm

i was looking at someones feedback, and almost all of their ones and twos said "rating changed by level 2 mod." when they were legite ratings because the person that answered the question gave crappy answers. why can the mods. change the rating if the person gave a bad answer?

I'm one of the *about 10* admins who can do that.

1's for abuse and only abuse. You shouldn't rate a one unless the person did something where they should get banned.

We change a lot of 1's.

Some people rate low because they're told what they don't want to here. They're in denial or just want someone to agree with them. We're not here to agree, we're here to give the best advice possible; to help the person as much as we can and tell them how we would handle the situation.

Some people get 1's for saying "spell correctly" or for mocking the questioneers bad spelling/grammar/punctuation or lack there of, etc.
Normally, I'll bump those to a 2 because the person needs to hear it (unless they're from a country where it's hard to translate properly). Because although they didn't answer the actual question, they weren't being harmful. Sometimes, if they correct them and then answer the question properly I'll bump it to a 3.

We hardly ever change anything to a 4. Even more rarely do we change it to a 5 (in fact, I'm not sure I've ever changed anything to a 5). A 3 is a good rating. People don't seem to understand that.

Also, we don't lower ratings. If someone feels that (in my opinion) bad advice deserves a 5, we don't really mess with that. It's up to you.

We get a LOT of abuse reports from columnists hoping to get their ratings or someone elses bumped up. We have 2 particular columnists who file reports constantly because people were unfairly rated.

This is how columnists should be rated here (for the most part.. ) If they are unjustly given a 1 or 2, we change it. Here's how I define the ratings. Some people may or may not agree. Most of the admins ideas come pretty close to this. I made this up myself, so they probably don't all agree 100%. Here's my opinion anyway.

1's are to be given when someone gives you abusive or potentially harmful advice. You rate a one when you honestly think that the person needs to be banned. Not when they tell you something you need to know but don't want to hear - but when they tell you to slit your wrists, shoot your neighbor, go fight someone, etc. When they give you HARMFUL or ABUSIVE advice and NEED to be banned! That's why you rate a one. If you rate someone a 1 then you should follow through by making an abuse report. [Link](Mouse over link to see full location) If you have a question on how to properly file a report (believe me, many people do it incorrectly) let any moderator (preferably L2) know and they should be helpful in explaining it.

2's are to be given when the advice isn't quite what you were looking for. Maybe they misread your question or told you something you already knew (especially if you stated in the question that you already knew that). The advice isn't quite harmful and the person shouldn't be banned, it just didn't help.

3's are to be given when you know the user really tried to answer your question. It cleared up your question to an extent. It may not have been the best answer given ,but it helped. It was good enough to be taken seriously, possibly followed. Not amazing, but it helped. You may not use their advice, but you know that if you do it would work. This is the HIGHEST rating you should give IF the answer has improper spelling/grammar/punctuation to an extent. Everyone makes mistakes, but when it's on purpose (for example, people "tYp3 Liik3 thIIs nD lyKKe Dii$, etc) they do not deserve better than a 3, no matter how good their advice is. The need to at least use capitalization and punctuation.

4's are for pretty good advice. The person not only put effort into answering your question, but you're using their advice, and it works! If their answer is not typed nicely (correct spelling, grammar, punctuartion as best as possible) then they should NOT receive a 4. It could be the best answer you receive but if it's not typed as nicely as possible than it SHOULD NOT receive better than a 3!

5's are saved for the BEST advice possible. The person went above and beyond to answer your question. They took their time, you've used their advice, and it works perfectly, no flawys. Everything turns out great. Maybe they researched something for you, looked up a few websites for you to use. They're spelling/grammar/punctuation/capitalization skills are that of a high school english teacher. They typed like they would if they had to write an essay for an AP Sernior English class.

Only Level 2 Moderators and up [only like 10 people] can change ratings, and they will only raise a rating if they feel there is a good reason. Most of the time, ratings will be raised from a 1- which should only be used if the answer was abusive and/or offensive. Ratings are hardly EVER raised if there isn't a good reason- and are hardly raised to a 5.

If you need more help, you can ask any L2 Moderators more questions... here is a list of all the Moderators:
