SWIMMERS HELP ME!

Question Posted Wednesday July 11 2007, 4:32 pm

I have only taken 5 swimming lessons in my life. I can swim good, in the shallow end. Im going to a pool party in 3 hours and I dont know how to deal in the deep end without freaking out or almost drowning, and the person holding the party has been my best friend for 8 years, so I cant back down.

Please teach me the technique to floating and swimming in the deep end.
Especially how you can float in a somewhat vertical position in the deep end, without your feet touching the bottom of the pool. It just looks like a whole bunch of arm and leg flailing to me.

Thank you soo much!

I suggest you stay in, at the most, 4-5 ft deep water [You're a little over 5 ft, right?] And as the columnist below me suggested, ask one of your guy friends to give you a piggie back ride =)
Also, if you want to go to the deep end, grab onto the edges and just stay there and talk with a few people. You shouldn't have to swim the whole time, which brings me to the point--you don't have to be completely in the water. Just sit in the edges and talk to people.

As for the staying afloat in a vertical position--first thing you need to do is stay calm because if you don't, you will look like a spazzing out cat. So stay calm and kick your legs gently and wave your arms around in the water. IT's pretty hard to do for long periods of time so stay close to the edge =)

Have fun!

I personally advise you to stay in the shallow end, i used to be a competitive swimmer but i still preferred the shallow end! lol it's easier to stand etc. Or If you have guy friends make them give you a piggy back in the water (obviously you don't have to tell them you can't swim great in the deep end, just make it a fun thing). But anyway, keeping upfront in a pool seems basic but it's hard for everyone to do so i wouldn't worry too much.
'floating' upright is basically treading water:) :

Have a look at them and they'll explain how:)

Good luck with the pool party! Just be confident about it and it'll be fine:)

Note: swimming strokes are just like they are in shallow water except you can't put your feet down, just kick hard and remember to breathe!!

Breathe in a lot of air and don't let it out.

Then kick with your legs. Make sure your back is straight.
