double jointed/hypermobile

Question Posted Monday July 9 2007, 11:54 am

how do you know if you are double jointed? iv tried googling it and basically got nothing. but in my shoulders i can hear the joints or bones rubbing against each other sort of. and sometimes when i move my shoulders they pop and make this huge popping noise. sometimes it hurts and sometimes it doesn't. and then every now and then they get really sore. then sometimes with my knees it will feel like my knee cap is going to dislocate? my ankles crack and pop when i go up the stairs, but that happens with my mom too.
i have no idea why its doing this. it started maybe 6 months ago?
i have played soccer for about 10 years and used to dance for about 6 years, if that helps.

thanks so much

well its probably genetic since your mom has that same problem. your probably just double-jointed but it shouldn't hurt. but since it does you should go see a doctor. i hope i helped!

you could be double jointed...but it shouldn't hurt...you could have a lack of cartilage in your joints...you should see a doctor who can run some tests to see if you have a lack of cartilage and get you to a bone specialist...my friend has it and her knees are practically grinding together...it can be painful and really harmful to your body

yea, my shoulders can pop out of their sockets also and make a noise--none of my friends can, so i do think that is somewhat double jointed. I also have that happen with my ankles and my knee, and ive been playing soccer for 11 years, so maybe it has to do with soccer...but the pain in your knee could also be growing pains. xoxo

almost everyone is double jointed in their shoulders... if you wanna know if you are.. get like a pipe or something, hold onto it with both hands infront of you then take it back across your head and striaght down, if you cant do it, then your not double jointed. if you do, then yes you are. but them hurting and stuff, i dont know if that has to dowith you being double jointed. try seeing a doctor.. and your ankles, they might just need a rest from sports, or they just might crack. im going to go go college for physical therapy. so try making your A B C's using your foot, to help your ankles from cracking, it helps, not right away, but after you do it everyday in about two weeks, you will notice they dont crack as much... hope i helped<33
